Short Bio.

Professor Dr. Ralph Bock is the director of the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Plant Physiology in Potsdam-Golm, Germany, and Professor at the University Potsdam. He received his PhD in Genetics from University of Freiburg in 1996, and was promoted to the full professor (C4) in 2001 in University of Münster, Germany.

Professor Bock is the Member of the National Academy of Science (Leopoldina, 2010), the Elected Member of EMBO (2015), the Recipient of the Martin Gibbs Medal of ASPB (2017), and the Distinguished Professor in Hubei University, China (from 2016).

Professor Bock’s research is interested in chloroplast biology, RNA metabolism, photosynthesis, experimental evolution, biotechnology and synthetic biology, and systems biology. He had published about 200 papers as the senior author in Science, Nature, Nature Biotechnology, Nature Structural & Molecular Biology, PNAS, Current Biology, The Plant Cell and other journals. Professor Bock is the senior editor of The Plant Cell, the associate editor of Transgenic Research and Molecular Plant.

 

AbstractIn my talk, I will describe experimental approaches to study genome evolution in real time. I will discuss three fundamental processes in eukaryotic genome evolution and show how they can be reconstructed in laboratory experiments: (i) the transfer of organellar (plastid and mitochondrial) genes to the nuclear genome, (ii) the horizontal movement of organellar DNA between plants, and (iii) the travel of nuclear genetic material between plants by horizontal genome transfer. I will describe our current knowledge about the underlying mechanisms, and discuss the role of gene and genome transfer events in the generation of natural diversity and in the formation of new species. Finally, I will show how horizontal gene transfer can be employed as a versatile tool in plant biotechnology and synthetic biology.
